Context
Water: because aquaponics circulates water in a closed loop, only a small amount needs replacing. Soil-free systems use less than 20% of the water of soil-based farming according to the FAO; in the INAPRO recirculation system, daily freshwater demand was even below 3% of system volume. In water-scarce regions, this is the key advantage.
Soil: traditional agriculture depends on fertile soil, a resource that is running out. According to the FAO, around 33% of the world's land area is moderately to severely degraded. Aquaponics requires no farmland and can be operated on degraded or sealed surfaces.
Economic viability: this is a clear weakness of aquaponics. Installations only become viable above a certain size; in the studied case, the break-even point was reached only after around twelve years. Traditional farming is often operable with far lower outlay.
Balance
Aquaponics is no silver bullet. Its biggest weaknesses are the high upfront investment, technical complexity, and above all energy dependence: pumps, aeration, and heating or cooling all need reliable power. If the energy supply fails, the whole cycle is at risk.
Operation also requires expertise from two worlds at once: fish keeping and plant cultivation, with careful monitoring on top. Traditional agriculture has real strengths in comparison: lower barriers to entry, established value chains, and with regenerative methods like permaculture, demonstrably positive effects on soils and biodiversity.
For us, this does not lead to an either-or. Aquaponics plays to its strengths where water and fertile soil are scarce and location-independence matters. Regenerative land use works where soils exist and can be built up. Project Oasis deliberately combines both.
Aquaponics is no silver bullet. Energy dependence and high upfront costs: we name them deliberately.
